DIY Agate Coasters

DIY Agate Coasters

Every time I have seen agate coasters in the store they catch my eye. They are an artsy piece that add beauty to coffee tables and counter tops. I love the eye-popping, vivid colors and unique patterns….until I flip them over and see the price tag. These are currently being sold by many designers and stores (see here, here, here) with a steep mark-up. But the secret is, with a few steps, they are easy to create at home!

First things first:  find a good place to purchase the agate slices. The size should be at a minimum of 3 inches across, but preferably 4 inches. Etsy is a great place to search. The leaf paint can be found at most craft stores. On the back of the coaster I recommend clear tabs, such as the bumpers that can be used on the inside of cabinet drawers. The agate can be semi-transparent, so the clear bumpers hide easily but still prevent the coaster from sliding on the table.

Supplies:

  • Agate Slices (at least 3×3 inches)
  • Liquid Leaf
  • Small paint brush
  • Clear, self-adhesive rubber tabs

Instructions:

  • Clean off agate slices, allow to dry.
  • Shake liquid leaf well. Using paint brush, paint on liquid leaf carefully to edge of agate. Allow at least one hour to dry. Add a second coat.
  • Place four small, rubber tabs on bottom side of coaster, spacing out evenly.

These make a great gift for a birthday, housewarming party or bridal shower. Tie a few coasters together with a metallic ribbon and pair with cute cocktail glasses. Or simply mix up a cool cocktail and enjoy out on the patio.
