With the colder nights around the corner, there’s no better time to stock up on a good book. Last year my nightly routine included cozying up with a book next to the fireplace, in order to wind down from the hustle and bustle of the day. I go through phases of books I like to read, some months it’s novels, others times it’s Christian, then business and self-improvement books. Here are a few favorites from different genres.

books

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie:  During my first week of work, fresh out of graduate school, one of the top physicians in my company introduced himself to me and handed me a brand new copy of this book. Admittedly it sat on my nightstand for a couple months until I really started to read it. Now it is one of my favorite books ever and I find myself reading through chapters again from time to time. Carnegie’s book summarizes itself by its title, and is packed with wisdom. Despite being published in 1936, the advice still rings true today. It discusses how to be a leader in the workplace, instantly warm up to new people and overall a kind-hearted individual that others respect.

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert:  Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, uses personal stories and inspiration to fuel your creative capabilities. Gilbert has a calming but assertive voice to weave readers through the highs and lows of pursuing creative hobbies and occupations. Her approach is to work with “stubborn gladness” throughout her journey, choosing to trust that inspiration is always nearby, and to not let obstacles cause you to give up on big dreams. Great for anyone who wants to be motivated or receive encouragement in their artistic capabilities.

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins:  If you haven’t read this book yet, read it now! Often compared to as, “the British Gone Girl“, this thriller novel will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story begins with a divorced woman who, on her daily train commute, passes a couple everyday that appears perfect. Then she believes she has witnessed something life-changing with that couple, leading the novel into a fast-paced mystery. On October 7th this book will be released as a movie.

You and Me Forever by Lisa and Francis Chan: While the title sounds like it is solely for married couples, it is for both the married and single. Lisa and Francis are a married couple and they give their own perspective on a relationship. Rather than focusing on each other they explain how making God their priority also makes them stronger as a couple. Great read for anyone desiring a Christian relationship or marriage.

The Pioneer Woman Cooks A Year of Holidays by Ree Drummond:  You may be thinking, “She reads a cookbook?” Yes…but, this is not just any cookbook. It is also full of photography, inspiration and stories. Ree Drummond’s personality shines through as she goes through the different holidays in the year and offers delicious recipes, step-by-step, and hilarious pastimes of her family and childhood. Use caution: pictures throughout the book of her recipes, like the spicy BBQ whiskey sliders, will may cause intense hunger! It’s light reading and great to keep on hand when you need a holiday treat.

What I plan to read next:

She Reads Truth Book by Raechel Myers and Amanda Bible Williams:  Whether you are a devoted Christian or someone who feels lost and hopeless, She Reads Truth is a fantastic resource. She Reads Truth is a group that does Bible studies for women (and He Reads Truth for men), educates you on God’s Word and teaches you how to apply it to everyday life. Through their app you can also find a community of women to connect and grow with together. Now two of the writers are launching a book for the first time, available in October. The book will focus on how God and His Word stay true, no matter life’s circumstances. If it’s anything like their studies, it’s going to be nothing short of fabulous.

Live your life joyfully so,
