Five Things To Do When Visiting Estes Park, Colorado | Vacation Guide

When my cousin announced she was getting married in Estes Park, Colorado, I am pretty certain we all started planning our vacation to celebrate her marriage immediately. Wedding bells and dancing were going to kick off this festive week, but after that we had a few days to explore this beautiful village. Estes Park is a mountain paradise. Nestled within the Rocky Mountains, the opportunities for fun and adventure are almost endless! But where to start? To get your to-do list ready, here are five things to do when visiting Estes Park, Colorado!

Five Things To Do When Visiting Estes Park, Colorado

Rocky Mountain National Park

Neighboring Estes Park is the incredible Rocky Mountain National Park. From 14,000 foot mountains to dense forests to protected tundra, the landscapes within Rocky Mountain National Park are incredible. Hike one of the many trails within or around the park. Bear Lake and Emerald Lake are popular hikes, but other hikes such as climbing to the summit of Deer Mountain, will provide breathtaking views.

After a hike, drive the scenic route up to the Alpine Visitors Center. On this summer route, you will experience many lookout stopping points, mountain tundra and jaw dropping views. Keep a close look out for elk, coyote, bighorn sheep, chipmunks and deer.

(Travel tip:  If you visit on a popular travel week, be sure to start popular hikes very early. Access to Bear Lake and Emerald Lake was closed by at least 8:30 am on both of our morning attempts. You can still access either of these by taking the Hiker Bus out of Estes Park.)

The Stanley Hotel

One of the focal points of Estes Park is the historic Stanley Hotel. Sitting on a hill with billowing mountains in the background, the white buildings set themselves apart from the surrounding landscape. You may recognize parts of the Stanley Hotel from “The Shining” and a few “Dumb and Dumber” scenes. Walk around the rose garden and small hedge maze outside. Step indoors for a tour of the hotel and learn about the Stanley family and history of this hotel that has been an epicenter since 1909.

White Water Rafting

Near Estes Park is the Colorado River and the Cache la Poudre River. Float with your friends and family, navigating class I-IV rapids. Get ready to balance out the summer sun with splashes of cold mountain water. Rent a wetsuit, water shoes and rain jacket if you get chilled easily.

(Travel tip:  To get the best view and splashes sit in the front of the raft. If you prefer a more “dry” experience, sit in the back.)

The Downtown Riverwalk

Through the downtown, along Elkhorn Blvd, lies one of the unique gems of Estes Park:  The Riverwalk. The city landscapes a babbling river that travels through town with lush greenery and flowers. Along the walk are many taffy shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants, boutiques and bustling cafés.

One of my favorite ways to wake up in the morning was with a cup of Kind Coffee and stroll along the riverwalk. Stop at one of the many shaded benches along the way and soak in the pure bliss.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors
There are so many other wonderful activities to see and do in Estes Park. Take a ride on the local tramway to the top of a lookout point. Rent a boat and float on Lake Estes. Take a mountain bike rental through a trail in the mountains. Partake in fly fishing on Fall River, the stream that runs through town, or the Big Thompson River.

Where We Stayed

During our trip to Estes Park, we split up our stay within a couple of different rentals because my brother and sister-in-law had to return home halfway through our trip.

Fall River Village – This two bedroom two bathroom unit was within a complex that had a swimming pool and was an eight minute walk into the main town shopping area. We loved walking to go grab coffee in the morning!

Haber Motel – Some of us also stayed in this little motel where we were greeted by the owner himself. This six unit motel did not have many added perks but it was directly in the heart of town. The size of the rooms was very spacious and our unit included two large sink/counter areas which made getting ready for dinner quick and easy.

Fawn Valley Inn – Most of my family and extended family stayed at the Fawn Valley Inn. Step outside your condo unit and you were directly on the beautiful Fall River! This was one of many options along the Fall River that had rustic mountain vibes.

What I Wore

During our visit to Estes Park, we had a mix of activities from wedding events to outdoor sports. In the summer months, I strongly recommend a solid pair of hiking boots, athletic leggings, tank tops for the sunny days and light jackets for the cooler nights.  Pack sunscreen SPF 30 or greater and protective lip balm for coverage at the higher elevation.

A few of my favorites:

I could not think of a prettier place for a family vacation and wedding. My sweet cousin said her vows at the picturesque Della Terra Mountain Chateau and was such a beautiful bride!

Overall we had such a wonderful week in Estes Park and hope to return again soon! If you decide to visit during the summer months, my suggestion is to book any airfare, rental car and hotel reservations months out in advance because space is limited and prices increase the closer to summer. When dining or planning special outdoor activities, I also encourage reservations. One of our recommended restaurants is the Twin Owls Steakhouse. Order the Elk Medallions for a local dining experience.

While I loved sharing five things to do in Estes Park, Colorado – the possibilities are endless. May the world be yours to explore!

Happy travels!
